Visiting

- On Saturday, Sunday and holidays LAPD lists visiting from 9 AM to noon.
Where the jail is and who goes there
The 77th Street Regional Jail is at 7600 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90003. LAPD's Custody Services Division runs it, and it shares an address with the 77th Street police station. It is the regional jail for South Bureau, so people arrested in South Los Angeles are usually booked here. LAPD does not publish a table that matches each police area to a jail, so this is the usual pattern and not a promise. Officers can move people to other LAPD jails, so it helps to call and confirm.
Think of it as a holding jail. People are booked, processed and either released or moved on to court and, if bail is not posted, to county custody.
A medical staffing gap families should know about
NBC Los Angeles reported in October 2026 that the 77th Street jail has no medical personnel until January 4, 2027. LAPD attributed that to the temporary unavailability of medical personnel. The jail still accepts arrestees who do not need medical clearance. People who do need a medical evaluation before booking are taken to the downtown Metropolitan Detention Center or to the Van Nuys jail.
For a family, this means your loved one may not be at 77th Street even if they were arrested nearby. If you cannot find them, check the LASD Inmate Information Center or call (213) 473-6100. Also see our pages for the Metropolitan Detention Center and the Valley Jail Section. This note was accurate when it was written. LAPD may change it, so ask the jail.
Booking and release.
At booking, officers record the charge, take fingerprints and photos, check for medical needs and store belongings. A bail amount comes from the county schedule, or the person may be released before arraignment if the county's protocol covers the charge. See pre-arraignment release without cash bail. We cannot promise any release time. It depends on the jail, the person and the charge.
How bail is posted at 77th Street
LAPD says bail can be posted at its jails 24 hours a day. It takes cash, a valid surety bond, a cashier's check to the LAPD Bail Account from a California bank, and Western Union or US Postal money orders. A surety bond lets a family start with a down payment instead of the full bail.
When you call us we ask for the full name, date of birth, and the booking number if you have it. We prepare the bond and take it to the jail. The jail then checks it and handles release. Our guide to bail amounts in California explains how the number is set. If the case is heard downtown, the courthouse is a drive up the 110 from South Los Angeles. Confirm the courthouse with the county court.
Visiting, money and mail
Visits are limited. Bring a government photo ID and expect a search. A friend or family member can usually visit during the posted windows, and attorneys and bail agents follow separate rules. Call the jail at (323) 786-5541 before you leave home. The jail's TTY line is (323) 786-5600.
The LAPD page we reviewed does not list rules for mail or deposits here. Ask the jail before you send either. A person may be moved or released before a letter arrives. Public buses run along Broadway, and street parking near the station can fill up, so plan a little extra time.
If your loved one is moved to county custody
A person who stays in custody after arraignment is remanded to the Los Angeles County Sheriff. Men are processed at the Inmate Reception Center and then housed at Twin Towers or Men's Central Jail. Women go to Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. A bond can still be posted afterward. Call us before you go anywhere.
One more practical point. If you drive, the station and jail share one address, so signs and directions may say police station and not jail. Park, then ask the front counter or the jail entrance where to go. Keep the booking number and the person's full legal name on your phone. If you do not have a booking number yet, the LASD locator can often find it by name and date of birth.
How 1% down works for a South LA arrest
On 1% down, here is how it works. Bail Today, Pay Later lets you start with 1% of the bail amount down on approved credit, and the rest of the premium goes on a monthly plan. The premium itself is 10% of the bail, which is the filed rate, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. 1% down is the start of a payment plan, not the price. You can use the calculator or start the online application, which takes about 4 minutes and asks for no SSN online.
You can read more on the 1% down page. We are open 24 hours at (213) 725-2815 and we hold California Department of Insurance License #1843448. Nearby pages include Florence, Hyde Park and Vermont Knolls. Our free resources directory lists public defenders and legal aid.
