Broadway-Manchester is a residential part of South Los Angeles, named for the two streets that cross at its center, Broadway and Manchester Avenue. ZIP codes 90003 and 90047 cover it. It is a neighborhood of long time homeowners, church families, small stores and busy bus lines.

One thing sets it apart. The 77th Street Division station and the 77th Street Regional Jail sit right on Broadway at its edge.

The station and the jail share one address

LAPD's 77th Street Area station is at 7600 South Broadway, and the 77th Street Regional Jail uses the same address. The station front desk is 323-786-5077, and the jail answers at 323-786-5541. Our pages on the 77th Street station and the 77th Street Regional Jail have the details.

This corner of South Los Angeles has a long history of strong block clubs, church groups and neighbors who watch out for each other. When someone is arrested, the first people to help are often a pastor, a neighbor or a cousin who has been through it before. Lean on them, and share the facts you have with whoever is helping, so everyone says the same thing.

For many families here, that means the person is only a few blocks away, and the ride is short. It also means you can walk in the wrong door if you are tired. The station's front desk and the jail's bail window are not the same counter.

A warning about medical clearance

Recent news reports say the 77th Street jail has had no on site medical staff for some months, which means arrestees who need medical clearance may be taken to a different LAPD jail, usually the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown or the Valley Jail Section in Van Nuys. That can happen to anyone who is hurt, sick or on medication when arrested.

A person who is hurt, or who says they take medicine every day, should tell the arresting officers right away. Families can also tell the jail about medical needs when they call. We cannot control where LAPD sends anyone, and we will not guess. We can tell you what we know and help you find the person quickly.

So do not assume the person is down the street. Call the inmate line at 213-473-6100 or search app.lasd.org/iic first. It can save you a trip across town.

Walking, driving and buses

Broadway runs north and south through the neighborhood, with Manchester Avenue crossing it. Buses run along both. The Harbor Freeway, the 110, is a short distance west and carries you downtown if the person has been moved to the Metropolitan Detention Center.

If you are worried about parking, the streets around the station are residential and tight. Arrive before dark if possible, and keep valuables out of sight.

How 1% down helps when money is tight

A bail bond fee is called the premium. It is 10% of bail at the filed rate, or 8% if a private attorney is retained or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. Bail Today, Pay Later lets you start with 1% down on approved credit and pay the balance on a monthly plan.

If bail is $30,000, the premium is $3,000 and the 1% down payment is $300. A $5,000 bail has a $50 down payment. Approval is required and a co-signer is usually part of it. We explain the whole total first. The calculator shows the math for your amount.

The co-signer's role, said plainly

Money is stressful in any family, and it is more stressful in the middle of the night. Please do not borrow from a lender with sky high rates in a panic. Call us first, ask for the full total, and compare. A clear plan with 1% down on approved credit may be easier to handle than a quick loan.

A co-signer is an adult with steady income who promises the defendant will come to every court date. Many families here choose a parent, a grown child or a longtime friend who has a job. A recent pay stub is the usual proof.

If the defendant misses court, the co-signer could owe the full bail amount. We say that clearly because it is the most important part. Our guide to co-signer responsibilities explains it in plain words.

Courts, resources and the next steps

South Los Angeles cases may be heard in several courthouses depending on the charge, so check the paperwork. Some defendants are moved downtown to the Central Arraignment Courthouse on Bauchet Street. The release papers show the date, the court and the courtroom.

If the person cannot afford a lawyer, ask about a public defender at arraignment. Our resources directory lists free and low cost help, including court self help and legal aid. We do not give legal advice, and we do not recommend attorneys.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
