Free bail for pregnant women
Being in jail late in pregnancy is dangerous for mother and baby, with prenatal care, nutrition and stress all out of her hands. Jane Un posts bail with the premium waived for qualifying expectant mothers, so she can be home and under her own doctor's care.
The terms
The terms are the same as the program at ABBA Bail Bonds, which Jane also owns.
- Eight months pregnant or more
- Bail of $50,000 or less
- A non-violent charge
- A co-signer with a job and proof of income
- Subject to approval
Do not qualify? Please ask anyway. We are often able to help, whether that is a reduced premium, 1% down or another way to make it work.
Why it matters
Jails are built for holding people, not for late pregnancy. Prenatal visits can be missed, food is not chosen for a pregnancy, and the stress of custody is real. A mother released before delivery can keep her own doctor and her own support around her.
Jane has also long done small things that make a big difference. If a mother has been in jail for more than a week, Jane Un Bail Bonds will take her to a spa to clean up and relax before she is reunited with her family. If anyone has been in custody more than three days, we will bring a clean change of clothes.
How to ask
- Call (213) 725-2815 and say you are calling about the program for pregnant women.
- Tell us the jail, her name and the bail amount if you know it. Women arrested in Los Angeles County are usually housed at Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.
- Have the co-signer's proof of income ready.
Questions people ask
Who qualifies for free bail?
Expectant mothers eight months along or more, with bail of $50,000 or less on a non-violent charge, a working co-signer and proof of income. These are the same terms ABBA Bail Bonds uses. Approval is required.
What does free mean here?
We waive our premium for qualifying mothers to be. A co-signer still signs, and the defendant still has to make every court date.
I do not meet the terms. Can you still help?
Ask anyway. We are often able to help, through a waived or reduced premium or a 1% down plan.
Do you help mothers of young children too?
Call and tell us the situation. ABBA's program also looks at mothers with several young children at home.
