A rural corner with a busy station

Shadow Hills is a small community in the foothills at the northeast edge of the Valley, known for horse properties, large lots and quiet streets along Wentworth Street and Tujunga Canyon Boulevard. It is served by the LAPD Foothill Division, whose station is at 12760 Osborne Street in Pacoima.

Arrests here usually go to the Valley Jail Section in Van Nuys, but LAPD can move people. Call to confirm. See our Foothill station page and the Valley Jail page.

Distance is the real problem

From Shadow Hills, the Valley Jail is a long way, a long run of freeway and surface streets. Take the 210 west to the 5 south, then into Van Nuys. At night, plan for thirty minutes. In rush hour, it can take an hour or more.

Because of the distance, many families here do most of the work by phone. That works well with us. You can call, start the application online at /apply/, and send documents from home. You may never need to drive to the jail until the person is released.

Calls from properties and trailheads

The streets in Shadow Hills are narrow and often unlit. Police calls can involve traffic stops, property disputes, loud parties and occasional animal or fire issues. DUI stops are common on rural roads late at night, and the bail amount is set by the county schedule. If the arrest was on a hillside property or near the Hansen Dam edge, tell us where.

Read our guide on what to do after an arrest for a short checklist. The sheriff covers some foothill areas nearby, so we also help you confirm which agency made the arrest.

The cost

Premium is 10% of the bail on our filed rate, or 8% with a private attorney or a veteran defendant or co-signer. You start with 1% down on approved credit and pay the balance monthly.

  • With $10,000 bail, the premium is $1,000 and 1% down is $100.
  • With $30,000 bail, the premium is $3,000 and 1% down is $300.

Property owners sometimes ask about collateral. Whether it is needed depends on the bond and approval. Ask us. See 1% down versus 10% bail and the calculator.

What a bond means for a property owner

Shadow Hills has many longtime homeowners, and some wonder if a house is at risk when they sign for a relative. A bond is a promise that the person will come to court. If they do, the bond ends when the case ends. If they do not, the court can forfeit the bond, and a co-signer can be held responsible for the full amount and for costs. That is why we ask you to think hard before you sign, and why we remind clients of every court date.

Not every bond needs collateral. Some do, depending on the bail amount and the approval. We tell you up front, in plain words, before anything is signed. If the answer is no, great. If it is yes, you will know exactly what it is and how it is returned when the case ends.

Many co-signers in this area are retired or run small businesses. If your income is not a steady paycheck, bring tax papers or bank statements. Call us and we will tell you what may be accepted.

Visiting rules at the Valley Jail

The Valley Jail visiting window is Monday through Friday from 9:30 to noon and 1 to 2:30, and weekends and holidays from 8 to noon, per LAPD. One family or friend visit per day. Call 818-374-9645 first, since rules can change. A bail agent or attorney may visit at any time.

With a long drive, call before you set out. Moves between jails are common, and a drive wasted is time lost.

Court in Van Nuys

Foothill cases are usually heard at Van Nuys Courthouse East, 6230 Sylmar Avenue. Check your papers for the date and department. If you need a public defender or legal aid, see our resources directory. Learn what a missed date can cost in missed court dates.

A co-signer takes real responsibility, so read co-signer responsibilities before you agree.

We also help families in Sunland and Tujunga. Qualifying pregnant women, eight months or more, non-violent charge, bail $50,000 or less, with a working co-signer, may get free bail, premium waived, subject to approval. If you do not qualify, ask anyway. We are often able to help. See the program page.

Shadow Hills families tend to know each other. If you are worried about talk, just call. Your first question can be as simple as who to ask for.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
