Event nights and what they mean for arrests

South Park is home to Crypto.com Arena, LA Live and the Los Angeles Convention Center, so crowds fill the streets on game nights, concert nights and convention weekends. With big crowds come drinking, traffic jams, scuffles and fake tickets. Common reasons for arrests in this kind of place include public intoxication, drunk driving on the way home, fighting and trespassing.

Visitors from out of town get caught up too. If your person lives far away, tell us. A co-signer can usually start the process by phone and online. Read pre-arraignment release, because some low-level arrests end in release without bail.

Newton Division, and the Central Division line

South Park is mostly in the LAPD Newton Division, whose station is at 3400 South Central Avenue. Parts of the area near downtown are covered by Central Division. Which station has the person depends on the exact street. During large events, police may also have extra officers on duty.

Arrests here usually end up at the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown. It is just over a mile away. LAPD can move people, so call to confirm. See the Newton station page and the MDC page.

A short trip, and a loud one on game night

From LA Live, the MDC at 180 North Los Angeles Street is a few minutes by car, a short ride on Metro, or a long walk. On game nights, traffic on Figueroa and Olympic is slow, and parking garages charge event rates. The A Line stops at Pico Station near the arena, and runs to Union Station.

If you are driving to the jail from far away, take the 110 or the 10 to the Civic Center. Late at night the drive is short and the streets are quiet. Our office at 900 Avila St is close by too.

Costs and how 1% down works

The premium is 10% of the bail on our filed rate. It is 8% when a private attorney is retained or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. With 1% down on approved credit, the balance goes on a monthly plan.

  • On $5,000 bail, the premium is $500 and 1% down is $50.
  • On $20,000 bail, the premium is $2,000 and 1% down is $200.

Use the calculator. For the basics, read how bail works in Los Angeles.

Visitors, tourists and out-of-state ID

An out-of-town visitor can get a bond like anyone else, but a few extra steps may apply. The co-signer should bring ID, and proof of income. If the defendant lives in another state, the court will still set dates in Los Angeles, and missing them can lead to a warrant. Read missed court dates before you sign.

If you need a lawyer or free legal help, our resources directory lists public defenders and legal aid. We cannot recommend an attorney, but it is smart to talk to one.

Court and what comes next

Downtown bookings are usually arraigned at the courthouse on Bauchet Street. Felony cases go on to the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on West Temple Street. Show up early and bring your ID. You can find the date with the county inmate locator or by calling 213-473-6100.

You can start the paperwork at /apply/, about four minutes with no Social Security number typed online. A co-signer needs ID and proof of income. Read co-signer responsibilities.

Neighbors and the pregnancy program

We also serve Central-Alameda and Downtown. Qualifying pregnant women, eight months or more, non-violent charge, bail of $50,000 or less, with a working co-signer, may get free bail, premium waived, subject to approval. If you do not qualify, ask anyway. We are often able to help. See the program page.

If your person is held longer than a night, they may move to the county jails. We can help you find them and update your plan.

The first hour is for facts. Get the full name, birth date, the place and time of the arrest, and the charge if known. Then call us and we will tell you the bail amount and the choices. Do not argue with anyone at the jail window. Be polite, and let us handle the paperwork. If you are a witness or friend at the scene, write down what you saw while it is fresh, and give it to the person's lawyer later.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
