Rampart Division handles Pico-Union
Pico-Union belongs to the LAPD Rampart Division. The station is on West 6th Street near Union Avenue, close to MacArthur Park and the heart of Westlake. If someone was picked up near Pico Boulevard, Union Avenue or Hoover Street, this station is probably where the report began.
People arrested in the Rampart area are usually booked at the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown, only a couple of miles east. LAPD can move people, so call before you go. Our Rampart station page has the front desk number, and the MDC page covers visiting.
Muy cerca del centro
Pico-Union is one of the closest neighborhoods to the downtown jails. From Pico and Union you can take the 10 or the 110 Freeway to the Civic Center, or ride Metro from nearby stations toward downtown. Many families here do not drive, so we are happy to talk through the bus and train routes while you are on the phone.
Parking near the MDC is tight on weekdays. A short rideshare is often the easier choice. Remember that you cannot always visit right away. Visiting windows are set by the jail, and bail can be posted at any hour.
Language help for families
Many households in Pico-Union speak Spanish at home. Ask for a Spanish speaking agent when you call, and we will try to connect you. We cannot promise a specific person on every call, but you will never need to repeat everything in a second language to be understood.
Written information for families can feel heavy, so we keep ours simple. You can also use our resources directory to find public defenders, court self help centers and legal aid, many with Spanish services.
Who is a co-signer and what do they need
A co-signer is the adult who vouches that the defendant will come to every court date. It can be a parent, a spouse, an older child or a friend with steady work. They should bring a photo ID and proof of income, like a recent pay stub. If work is paid in cash, call us. We will talk through what proof might be accepted.
Co-signing is a serious promise, and we want you to know what it means before you agree. Read co-signer responsibilities. Nobody should feel pressured, and you can ask us anything before you decide.
Cost, in plain numbers
The premium is 10% of the bail on our filed rate. It becomes 8% when a private attorney is retained or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. Starting with 1% down on approved credit leaves the balance for monthly payments.
- On a $5,000 bail, the premium is $500 and 1% down is $50.
- On a $30,000 bail, the premium is $3,000 and 1% down is $300.
Our calculator shows your own numbers. Read how bail works in Los Angeles if the whole system is new to you.
What to expect on the day of release
After we post the bond, the jail processes the paperwork. That can take hours, and the length depends on the jail, not on us. Families usually wait outside or nearby. Bring a phone charger, some water and a little cash for parking or a snack. If the person has been inside a while, a change of clothes and a jacket can mean a lot, because jails release people in what they were wearing when they were arrested.
When your person comes out, they will have papers that list court dates. Take a photo of every page that same night. Do not wait. If anything looks wrong or confusing, call us and read the dates aloud to us. We will help you make sure nothing gets missed.
Pico-Union families often share one phone and one car, so plan who will pick up and who will go to court. Having a backup person for each date makes a real difference.
Court, then what
After downtown booking, the first court appearance is usually at the arraignment court on Bauchet Street. Felony cases go on to the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Show up to every date. Missing one can put the bond at risk, so read what happens if a court date is missed.
We also help families in Westlake and Koreatown. Apply online at /apply/ in about four minutes, with no Social Security number typed online. Qualifying pregnant women may get free bail through our program, subject to approval.
1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
