Canyon roads, late nights and DUI stops

Hollywood Hills West is a maze of narrow roads that wind off Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive. Late night traffic on those curves draws a lot of police attention, and drunk driving stops are among the more common reasons families call us from this area. A first-time DUI is often a misdemeanor with a bail amount set by the county schedule, which is usually far lower than people imagine.

If the arrest came from a traffic stop, there is a chance the person was released at the scene or the station with a promise to appear. Our guide on pre-arraignment release explains when that happens. Always check before paying for a bond you may not need.

Hollywood Division, up on Wilcox

This neighborhood is served by the LAPD Hollywood Division. The station is at 1358 North Wilcox Avenue, down in the flats near Hollywood Boulevard. Officers booking someone from the hills may take them to that station first and then on to the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown. LAPD can move people between facilities, so call to confirm before driving anywhere.

You can see the details on our Hollywood station page. The MDC page shows bail posting and visiting hours.

The Sunset Strip and who makes the arrest

Many people think of the Sunset Strip as part of this area, but most of it sits in West Hollywood, which the Sheriff's Department covers. An arrest on the Strip itself is often handled by the sheriff, not LAPD, and the person may go to a different holding place. Laurel Canyon and the hills just above the Strip can cross the line too.

This matters because the jail and the paperwork change. If you are not sure who made the arrest, tell us the street, and we will help you work out whether it was LAPD or the sheriff. You can also look the person up with the county's inmate locator.

Getting from the hills to the jail

From Laurel Canyon or Runyon Canyon, take Sunset or Hollywood Boulevard down to the 101 Freeway, then head south and east to downtown. Late at night it is about twenty minutes. In rush hour the 101 can be slow, and the canyon roads back up quickly when there is a closure or a brush fire warning.

When you reach the Civic Center, park in a garage rather than hunting for a spot. Our office at 900 Avila St is nearby if you want to sit down with someone in person, but most families finish everything by phone and online.

How the money works

The premium is the fee for the bond. It is 10% of the bail on our filed rate, or 8% if a private attorney is hired or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. With 1% down on approved credit, the balance is spread over monthly payments.

  • Bail of $20,000 means a $2,000 premium, with $200 down.
  • Bail of $40,000 means a $4,000 premium, with $400 down.

Residents of the hills often own property or have steady income, which can help a co-signer qualify, but approval is never guaranteed. Try the calculator, or compare options in 1% down versus 10% bail.

What families in the hills ask us most

People from the hills tend to ask about three things. First, can the bond be arranged while the family is out of town or at work. The answer is usually yes, because the application is online and the paperwork can be handled by phone. Second, will the arrest show up for neighbors. We cannot control police or court records, and we keep calls private. Third, how fast can this move. We do not promise release times, because the jail controls that, but we start the moment you call.

If you are worried about a visit, remember that one friend or family member may visit per day at LAPD jails, and attorneys and bail agents may visit at any time. Check the jail page for hours before you drive down.

Court and next steps

Arrests from this area are usually heard in downtown courts. In-custody arraignments are typically at the courthouse on Bauchet Street, with felonies continuing at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Tell us the date and we will help you keep track of it. Read what to do after an arrest for a checklist you can follow tonight.

We also cover nearby Hollywood and Studio City. You can apply online at /apply/ in about four minutes, with no Social Security number typed online.

For pregnant women, our program may offer free bail to qualifying women, subject to approval. If you do not think you qualify, ask anyway.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.

Questions people ask

Is the Sunset Strip handled by LAPD?

Usually not. Most of the Strip is in West Hollywood, which the Sheriff's Department covers. Tell us the street and we will help sort it out.

Where will someone arrested in the hills be held?

Often the Hollywood station first, then the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown. LAPD can move people, so confirm by phone.

I think the DUI was a first offense. Do I still need a bond?

Possibly. Some people are released with a promise to appear. Check first, and call us if bail is required.

How much can I start with?

You can start with 1% down on approved credit. The full premium is 10%, or 8% in some cases, paid on a monthly plan.

Can I do this without leaving home?

Yes. Many families finish the process by phone and online.
