Hancock Park falls under the Wilshire Area

Hancock Park is covered by the LAPD Wilshire Area. The station is on Venice Boulevard, southwest of the neighborhood, not on Wilshire Boulevard as many people guess. Our Wilshire station page has the address and the front desk number.

The station desk can confirm that someone was arrested, but it is usually not where bail is posted. Arrests here usually move on to the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown. LAPD can send people elsewhere, so call 213-473-6100 and ask where the person is held before anyone drives.

The drive downtown from the historic district

From the Hancock Park Historic District you have two plain choices. Take Wilshire Boulevard east toward downtown, or cut over to Beverly Boulevard and then join the Hollywood Freeway or Harbor Freeway. Either way, the jail area is on Los Angeles Street near Temple Street.

At night the freeways are faster, and in the morning rush they can be slow. Look at a live map before you leave. Our MDC page lists the address and what to bring if you plan to visit.

What an arrest can look like on these blocks

Hancock Park is known for large old homes, wide lawns and quiet streets, but the neighborhood is also bordered by busy ones. La Brea Avenue on the east, Wilshire Boulevard to the south and Melrose Avenue to the north carry traffic all day and most of the night. That is where many calls to us begin, from a traffic stop, a dispute that got loud or a mistake after a late dinner.

Whatever the cause, the steps are the same. Officers take the person to a station or a jail, the booking staff record the charge, and the bail amount is set from the county schedule unless a judge changes it. If you want to understand how those amounts are set, read how much bail is in California.

One more thing worth saying. Do not discuss the case on a jail phone. Calls from jail are recorded. Let the person say they are okay, give you the booking details and nothing more.

What families in this area usually want to know first

In a neighborhood known for privacy, the first worry is often who will find out. We keep your call confidential. A bond does not get announced to neighbors, and the only people who need to know are you, the person in custody and the court.

The second worry is cost. Premium is 10% of bail, or 8% if a private attorney is retained or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. If you are approved, 1% down gets the process started and the balance goes on a monthly plan. Learn more about 1% down versus 10% bail before you decide.

A sample bail, in plain numbers

Bail setPremium at 10%Down at 1%
$15,000$1,500$150
$40,000$4,000$400
$75,000$7,500$750

The right column is only the first payment on approved credit. The balance is paid monthly. Your own figures can be run in the calculator.

After the bond, the court side

Cases that start downtown are usually heard at the Central Arraignment Courthouse and then, for felonies, at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Misdemeanor matters can be assigned differently, so check the date on the paperwork and confirm with the court clerk.

A co-signer is responsible for making sure the person returns to court. Our guide to how bail works in Los Angeles covers the whole path in one read.

If a pregnant family member is in custody, ask us about our program for qualifying pregnant women. Free bail with the premium waived is only for those who qualify, subject to approval, and we will tell you plainly where you stand. See the pregnancy bail page.

Neighbors next door

If the arrest happened on the other side of La Brea, see our pages for Larchmont and Mid-Wilshire. They share the same station but have their own streets and stories.

Ready to move? The online application takes about 4 minutes.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.

Questions people ask

Is the Wilshire station on Wilshire Boulevard?

No. The LAPD Wilshire Community Police Station is at 4861 W. Venice Blvd. Do not go to a Wilshire Boulevard address looking for it.

Where is bail paid for a Hancock Park arrest?

Usually at the jail where the person is held, which is often the downtown MDC. A bail agent can post the bond for you, so you do not carry cash or a cashier's check.

Can my attorney call us?

Yes. When a private attorney is retained, the premium rate can drop to 8%. Tell us when you call.

Will anyone in my neighborhood be told about a bond?

No. We keep your information private. Arrests and court dates are public record, but our work with you is not announced.

What if I cannot get approved?

Call anyway. A different co-signer, a smaller first payment or another way to qualify may work. We will tell you honestly what we see.
