Wilshire Division covers most of Fairfax

The Fairfax district falls under the LAPD Wilshire Division, whose station is at 4861 West Venice Boulevard. That is a few minutes south of Fairfax and Wilshire. Parts of the neighborhood touch Hollywood Division territory too, so which station made the arrest depends on the exact block.

Arrests made in this area usually go on to the Metropolitan Detention Center downtown, though LAPD can move people between jails for medical or space reasons. See our Wilshire station page for the front desk number, and our MDC page for what happens once someone is booked.

From Fairfax Avenue to the downtown jail

The usual drive is east along Wilshire or Olympic, then onto the 10 or the 101 heading toward downtown. It is roughly eight miles, and traffic can double the time at rush hour. At 3 in the morning it is a quick run.

If you cannot drive, Metro buses run along Wilshire and Fairfax, but service thins out late, so a rideshare is often easier after midnight. Once you reach the Civic Center area, parking near Los Angeles Street is limited. Plan on a lot or a garage.

Arrests near the Farmers Market, LACMA and Melrose

This part of town draws visitors all day. Tourists at the Farmers Market, museum crowds near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and diners and shoppers along Fairfax and Melrose mean that people from out of town sometimes end up in custody. If your family member does not live in California, tell us. We can still help, and a co-signer can often be handled by phone and online.

Shoplifting, drunk driving and disorderly conduct are among the more common reasons people call us from busy commercial areas, but we never assume. Give us the charge and the bail amount, and we will explain it. Our guide how much is bail in California shows how the county schedule sets amounts.

Understanding the premium

The premium is the fee we charge, set by our filed rate. It is 10% of the bail, or 8% when a private attorney is hired or the defendant or co-signer is a veteran. The 1% down is only your starting payment on approved credit, with the rest paid over time on a monthly plan.

Say bail is $15,000. A 10% premium is $1,500, and 1% down is $150. The remaining balance is spread across monthly payments. Use our calculator to see your own case, and read whether bail money is returned so you know what to expect later.

What to bring and who can sign

A co-signer is the person who promises the defendant will go to court. It can be a spouse, parent, sibling or a friend with steady income. They should have a government ID and a recent pay stub or other proof of work. If you are unsure, call us before you gather anything.

You can also begin online at /apply/, about four minutes and no Social Security number typed online. Families in Fairfax often include working parents who cannot leave a job, so doing this from a phone helps.

The first hours after the call

Once you call, we ask for the full legal name, date of birth if you have it, the jail or station, and the charge. With those details we can look up the booking record and tell you the bail amount. If the person has not been booked yet, we will tell you that too, because the system can lag behind an arrest by a few hours.

While we work, you can help by gathering the co-signer's ID and pay stub, and by writing down any court paperwork the person was handed. Stay on the line with us if you can. A calm list of facts moves things along faster than a long story, and we are used to hearing both at 2 in the morning.

After the bond is posted, we tell the family what to expect at release and where to pick the person up. Release timing depends on the jail, so we never promise a clock time, but we keep in touch until your person is out.

Court dates and what happens next

Downtown bookings are usually arraigned at the courthouse on Bauchet Street, with felony cases continuing at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on West Temple Street. Missing a court date is serious and can cost the whole bond, so we remind clients and explain the rules. Read about what happens if a court date is missed.

Neighbors of Fairfax include Hollywood and Mid-Wilshire, and we cover them too. If a pregnant woman is in custody, our pregnancy program offers free bail for qualifying women, subject to approval.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
