Men's Central Jail

How to Visit Someone at Men's Central Jail

LASD lists Men's Central Jail public visiting Thursday through Sunday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Every visit is by appointment, and every visitor must register first at visit.lasd.org. No walk-ins. Arrive 60 minutes before your appointment. People who are still unclassified after booking cannot be visited yet.

What are the Men's Central Jail visiting days?

LASD lists public visiting at MCJ on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The jail is at 441 Bauchet Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Visits are booked through LASD visit scheduling. You can schedule up to 7 days ahead. LASD says general population inmates get at least two 30-minute visits a week, in person or by video, so a slot is not unlimited. Plan which family member gets it.

How early should I arrive at MCJ?

MCJ is one of two LASD sites where you are told to arrive 60 minutes before the appointment. At most other LASD locations it is 30 minutes. Check in with staff when you arrive, because LASD says the visit may be cancelled if you do not.

Downtown parking near the complex is tight, so build in extra time. Our Men's Central Jail page has a few notes on the area.

Who can visit and what about kids?

Adults register as visitors and bring valid ID. Visitors on probation, on parole or with a past felony must complete a Visiting Clearance form first. LASD's FAQ says approval can take up to a month, and it lists the Legal Unit at (213) 974-0103 for questions.

Minors have their own rules. With a parent, a child under 15 needs a birth certificate, and a child over 15 can use a school ID, state ID or passport. With anyone other than a parent, a minor under 18 also needs a notarized letter from the parent. With a legal guardian, bring the court papers.

Can I visit right after an arrest?

Usually not. Newly booked men are processed first, then classified, and LASD says unclassified inmates cannot receive visits or calls. That can take two weeks to a month. If you drive downtown and he has not been housed, you will be turned away.

Use the lookup in our inmate search help to confirm he is in the system. For a status question, the visiting lobby number LASD lists is (213) 974-4927, and the main lobby is (213) 974-4082.

What about attorney visits, dress code and video?

LASD lists professional visiting at MCJ Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with the last pass at 5:45 PM. Valid ID is required.

The LASD pages we read do not publish a dress code, so ask the visiting lobby before you go and wear plain, covered clothing to be safe. LASD counts video visits as part of the weekly visits, but we could not confirm which jails offer them, so ask when you book.

If a bond is the goal, 1% down on approved credit may help, and a visit is no substitute for knowing the bail amount. We take calls at (213) 725-2815.

What if my Men's Central visit is cancelled?

The most common cause is arriving late. LASD says to check in with staff when you arrive, or the visit may be cancelled. Jail operations can also change a day. For scheduling problems, the help desk LASD lists is IVVSPublicHelpDesk@lasd.org or (213) 680-4887, Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 2 PM. For ADA help, call (213) 972-2200 in the same hours.

Do not get discouraged. Write down the booking number, the time you booked and the name of anyone you speak with, then book the next open slot.

Twin Towers across the street runs Saturday through Tuesday, not Thursday through Sunday, and the Inmate Reception Center next door has no visiting, so confirm his building first. See our Twin Towers page if he was moved.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
