What happens after a Southeast Station arrest?
Southeast Station is at 145 W. 108th St. in the South Bureau. Its official area includes Watts, Harbor Gateway, Athens Park, Avalon Gardens, Hacienda Village and the Imperial Courts, Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens communities. Families here are often close to the station, but the person is rarely kept there for long.
Officers take the person to a jail for booking. Booking means the jail records the person and the charge and stores belongings in a bag. A person must be allowed at least three completed phone calls within three hours of arrest.
Is the Southeast Station arrestee taken to the 77th Street jail?
Usually. The 77th Street Regional Jail is at 7600 S. Broadway in South Los Angeles. Its number is (323) 786-5541. LAPD does not publish a station to jail chart, and a person can be sent to a different LAPD jail, for instance if they need a medical check. If you go to the wrong place you lose time, so call first.
When the person is not at 77th Street, they may be at the downtown or Van Nuys jail. The county line, (213) 473-6100, tells you where. Have the full name and date of birth ready. Records do not show a new booking for about 2 hours.
When can bail be posted after a Southeast Station arrest?
LAPD says its jails take bail 24 hours a day by cash, valid surety bond, a cashier's check to the Los Angeles Police Department's Bail Account, or certain money orders. A licensed bail agent signs a bond for a premium. We offer a 1% down option on approved credit, with the premium set at 10%, or 8% in certain cases.
Before you pay anything, learn how bail is set at this jail on how bail is set at the 77th Street jail. Then read what happens after bail is posted at the 77th Street jail. The jail still has to verify the bond and finish release paperwork. If the person has another hold, bail on one charge does not clear it.
What happens at arraignment, and then at county jail?
The court says arraignment typically happens within 48 hours of arrest unless there is a holiday or a weekend. LAPD says the court depends on where the arrest occurred and on the charge. Ask the jail.
People still in custody after arraignment are remanded to the Sheriff's Department. Men are usually processed at the Inmate Reception Center, a temporary holding center with no visiting. Women are held at Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. LASD does not notify families about transfers. Call (213) 473-6100. What should a Southeast Station family do now?
- Call the jail or the county line before you drive anywhere.
- Write down the full name, date of birth and booking number.
- Ask about the charge, the bail amount and any other holds.
- If you want a lower amount before court, call the Pre-Arraignment Support Unit at (213) 633-6350 within two hours of booking.
- Call a licensed agent. Ours is at (213) 725-2815.
See the Southeast Station page for more local help. Keep the person's belongings in mind too. They go into a property bag at booking and are returned at release, so bring your own ID when you go to pick them up and keep every receipt and piece of bond paperwork in one place.
1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
