77th Street Regional Jail
How to Visit Someone at the 77th Street Regional Jail
The 77th Street jail lists weekday visiting from 10 AM and 1 PM to 3 PM, and weekend and holiday visiting from 9 AM to noon. Each person gets one visit a day, one visitor, 15 minutes. Staff can cancel visits. Call (323) 786-5541 before you go. Attorneys, bail agents and clergy may visit anytime.
What are the 77th Street visiting hours?
LAPD lists Monday through Friday visiting from 10 AM, with an afternoon window of 1 PM to 3 PM. The end of the morning window is printed as 12 AM, which looks like a typo, so confirm by phone. On Saturday, Sunday and holidays, LAPD lists visiting from 9 AM to 12 PM.
The jail is at 7600 S. Broadway in South Los Angeles. The phone is (323) 786-5541 and the TTY line is (323) 786-5600. Call on the day you plan to go. Hours can change.
How long is a visit and who can come?
LAPD's plan allows one visit per person per day, with one visitor. One child may come with that adult. A visit lasts up to 15 minutes. If several relatives want to see the person, they will have to take turns on different days or decide who goes.
Pick the person who can help most. Ask about court, medicine and who is watching the kids. The visit is short, so write down your questions first.
Can the jail cancel my visit?
Yes. The watch commander may cancel visits when staffing is low or other needs come first. Because of that, it is smart to call before making the trip across the city. If a visit is canceled, ask when to try again, and use mail or the lawyer to pass on messages.
Who can see an inmate at any hour?
LAPD says an attorney, a bail bondsperson or clergy may visit at any time. If you have a lawyer, ask them to go. If you need a bond, a bail agent can come to the jail without waiting for a visiting window.
You do not have to be there for that. Read how release after bail works, or look at our free resources directory for public defenders and legal aid.
What about ID, dress code and video visits?
LAPD does not list ID rules, dress code, registration or video visits for 77th Street. We will not guess. Bring a government photo ID, the same as most jails ask for, and ask the jail what else it needs.
If your loved one is moved to county custody, visits work differently. LASD requires an online appointment at visit.lasd.org and registration. See the Inmate Reception Center, Men's Central Jail and Century Regional Detention Facility pages.
How do I get ready for a short South LA visit?
A 15 minute visit goes by quickly, so make a short list. Ask whether they have a lawyer, whether they take medicine, and who is watching the kids or the car. Tell them the plan. If you are working on bail, say so. Hearing that someone is already moving is a real comfort at 2 AM.
Plan your trip. Broadway is busy, parking near the jail can be tight, and the window you want may close early if staff are short. Leave early, bring a government photo ID, and keep your phone off the whole visit. Do not carry anything you are unsure about. If you are turned away, call the jail from the sidewalk and ask when to try again.
If the person is a parent, ask about child care first. Our 77th Street phone calls page explains the extra calls a custodial parent can ask for.
If you cannot visit at all, that is okay. A visit is not required for bail, and the person can still get help through the phone and their lawyer.
1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
Questions people ask
Can I visit right after the arrest?
LAPD does not say. The person may still be in booking. Call (323) 786-5541 first.
Can I bring a child?
One child may come with the one visiting adult, according to LAPD's plan.
Can I drop off items?
Do not bring items unless the jail says yes. Call first.
Is a visit the quickest way to help?
No. A bond is quicker. Call us at (213) 725-2815 and we can start one.
Can a bail agent see the person?
LAPD says a bail bondsperson may visit at any time. That is how an agent can handle a bond in person if it is needed, without a family visit.
