Is there a separate search for the 77th Street jail?

No. The 77th Street Regional Jail is an LAPD jail at 7600 S. Broadway, and LAPD does not run its own public arrestee lookup. Its pages point you to the LASD Inmate Information Center, one search that covers LAPD and county jails alike.

The form asks for last name, first name, middle name and date of birth. Spell the name the way it would appear on an ID. Our guide to finding someone in jail has more ideas if the first try fails.

My family member was arrested in South LA. Why can't I find them?

Start with the clock. LAPD, LASD and the lookup page itself say records are not available for bookings in the last 2 hours. A late night arrest can take a while to show.

Next, check the name. LASD says people are booked with or without a middle name, so try both. Try other names the person has used. If you do find the name, you will see the booking number, which you will need later.

Last, remember that the arrest area does not decide the jail. LAPD does not publish which arrests go to which jail, so the person could be held somewhere other than 77th Street. The county line can tell you which building has them.

What number do I call from South LA?

Use (213) 473-6100. LAPD says the public can call it 24 hours a day for information on anyone held at an LAPD or LASD jail. Have the full legal name and date of birth, plus the date of arrest if you know it. If you need a booking number, this is the call to make.

For the jail itself, LAPD lists (323) 786-5541, and a TTY line at (323) 786-5600. Staff may be busy, so be ready to call back.

Do I need the booking number?

It helps, but you can start without it. Jail staff, courts and bail agents use the booking number to pull the right record. A complete name search returns it, or you can ask the county line. We can also help you find it when you call. Have the name and date of birth, and we do the rest.

If you are ready to arrange a bond, see our page on release after bail at 77th Street.

What if they get moved to a county jail?

The 77th Street jail is a short stay. LAPD says those still in custody after arraignment are remanded to the county sheriff. LASD says it does not tell families when someone changes facilities, so keep checking. Men are usually processed through the Inmate Reception Center, and may be housed at Men's Central Jail. Women go to Century Regional Detention Facility.

Also, LASD notes that people who are not yet classified cannot get calls or visits, and that can take two weeks to a month.

What should I write down when I find the record?

Write down the full name as listed, the date of birth, the booking number and the jail name. Take a screenshot if you can. Details like these save time when you call a lawyer, the court or a bail agent. If the record lists a charge or a court date, note that too, because they tell you where to go next.

If the record does not show a bail amount, do not worry. Many records do not, and the county line or the jail can tell you. Our 77th Street bail amount page explains the next step.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
