One street, three buildings

The Van Nuys Community Police Station is at 6240 Sylmar Ave., Van Nuys, CA 91401, and its front desk number is 818-374-9500. The Valley Jail Section is at the same address, and its phone is 818-374-9645. The Van Nuys Courthouse East is next door at 6230 Sylmar Ave.

People arrested in Van Nuys are usually booked right there. The jail also takes people from other parts of the Valley, and in late 2026 it has taken some arrestees from other divisions who needed medical clearance. That means your person may be here even if they were not arrested in Van Nuys.

Our Valley Jail page and Van Nuys station page have the details.

Finding someone in this jail

Search the county locator at app5.lasd.org/iic or call 213-473-6100, the line LAPD lists for jail information. Use the full legal name. If you get nothing, try again in an hour, because new bookings take time to appear.

Do not just show up at the jail desk with no information. Staff cannot tell you much, and the line can be long. Check first, then decide whether to come.

If the locator shows a booking number, write it down. Our guide on finding someone in jail walks through what each field on the screen means.

Visiting hours and what to expect

LAPD lists Valley Jail visits Monday through Friday from 9:30 in the morning to noon and 1 to 2:30 in the afternoon, and on Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 8 in the morning to noon. One friend or family visit is allowed per day. Attorneys, clergy and bail agents may visit at any time.

Parking near Sylmar Avenue is limited and fills fast on weekdays because of the courthouse. Street spaces nearby have time limits, so read the signs. Bring a photo ID and little else.

Rules can change, and a holiday can shift the hours, so call the jail first if you can.

Bail posted right here

LAPD says bail can be posted at its jails 24 hours a day. A bond has to be written by a licensed agent, and the paperwork has to be complete. Our office in downtown Los Angeles, at 900 Avila St Suite 101, is not close to Van Nuys, but we do not need you to come to us. We handle most of the process by phone and online.

If you want to see how it works step by step, read our guide on how bail works in Los Angeles.

If a person is released from the Valley Jail late at night, they may need a ride and a phone. Many families wait outside in the car. Bring a jacket, a phone charger and a snack, since release can take hours after the paperwork is done, and we cannot promise a time.

What 1% down means on a Van Nuys bond

The premium is 10% of bail, the filed rate, or 8% with a private attorney or a veteran defendant or co-signer. With 1% down on approved credit, you pay a small first amount and the balance goes on a monthly plan.

If bail is $30,000, that is $300 down, with a $3,000 premium at 10%. If bail is $90,000, that is $900 down, with a $9,000 premium. Approval is needed, and 1% is not the price.

Use the calculator or the online application, which takes about 4 minutes and asks for no Social Security number online.

The courthouse next door

Many Valley criminal cases are heard at the Van Nuys Courthouse East, 6230 Sylmar Ave. The paperwork you get at release names the department and the date. If the case is in another court, the paperwork says so.

On court day, arrive early. Security lines can be long, and parking can be hard. Bring the notice, a photo ID and a pen. Dress simply and respectfully, and turn your phone off in the courtroom.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, ask for the public defender at the first appearance. Our resources directory lists legal help.

Plan for a wait inside, too. Many people are in line, and hearings are called in an order you cannot control. Bring water and patience, and ask the clerk or the bailiff if you are unsure where to go.

Neighbors and nearby places

Van Nuys touches Sherman Oaks, Lake Balboa, North Hills, Panorama City and Sun Valley. If your arrest was nearby, our pages for Panorama City and Sun Valley may help.

Van Nuys Airport brings private flights, business travelers and a lot of daytime traffic along Sepulveda and Victory Boulevards. The Metro G Line busway crosses the neighborhood on its way east and west, which gives families a way to reach the courthouse without a car.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
