Devonshire Division and the Etiwanda station
Northridge belongs to the LAPD Devonshire Division. The station is at 10250 Etiwanda Avenue, a short drive from Reseda Boulevard and the Northridge Fashion Center. Devonshire also covers Granada Hills, Porter Ranch and Chatsworth, so it covers a large part of the northwest Valley.
Arrests there usually go to the Valley Jail Section on Sylmar Avenue in Van Nuys, but LAPD can move people. Call to confirm. See the Devonshire station page and the Valley Jail page.
When the arrest happens near campus
California State University, Northridge sits in the middle of this neighborhood, and thousands of students live and work around it. Campus police handle many incidents on university grounds. A person arrested by campus officers can still end up booked into a county or city jail, and the paperwork may look different from an LAPD arrest.
If your student was arrested near campus, find out which agency made the arrest. Ask the student if you can reach them, or check the county inmate locator. Common reasons parents call us include drunk driving, party disturbances, drug possession and fights. We never judge. We explain the bail and the options.
Parents often live far away. That is fine. Everything can be done by phone and online.
The drive to Van Nuys
From Reseda Boulevard, take the 118 or Roscoe Boulevard east to Van Nuys. It is about fifteen to twenty-five minutes outside rush hour. The 405 and the 101 slow down badly on weekday afternoons. If you take transit, Metro buses run along Reseda and Nordhoff, but late service is thin.
The jail at 6240 Sylmar Avenue is next to the Van Nuys courthouse, so parking can be tight. Arrive early and be ready to walk.
What it costs, in plain numbers
The premium is 10% of the bail on our filed rate. With a private attorney, or a veteran defendant or co-signer, it is 8%. You begin with 1% down on approved credit, then pay the balance monthly.
- With $5,000 bail, the premium is $500 and 1% down is $50.
- With $15,000 bail, the premium is $1,500 and 1% down is $150.
- With $50,000 bail, the premium is $5,000 and 1% down is $500.
Students rarely have credit or income, so a parent usually signs as the co-signer. See co-signer responsibilities, and try the calculator.
A student's record and a parent's questions
Parents worry about school, jobs and futures. Those worries are fair. We cannot give legal advice or recommend an attorney, but we can tell you that a bond helps your student stay at home or in class while the case is handled. A lawyer, or a public defender if needed, can speak to the case. Our free resources directory lists public defenders and legal aid.
A bond does not erase a charge. The student must go to every date. Read missed court dates so they know why it matters.
First night checklist for parents
When the call comes late, parents freeze. Here is a short plan. Write down the full legal name and birth date. Ask where the person is and who arrested them. Find out the charge and the bail amount if anyone told them. Gather your photo ID and a recent pay stub, because the co-signer will need both. Then call us.
While we work on the booking record, keep your phone close and charged. The jail may call, or the student may get one phone call. Do not tell them to talk about the case on a jail phone, because calls can be recorded. Keep it short. Say you are working on it, and ask them to stay calm.
The Devonshire station is in your area, but the person will probably not be there long. Once booked, the Valley Jail holds most people until they are released or arraigned. That means a bond, if you choose one, can usually be done quickly once approved. We never promise a time, but we move as fast as the paperwork allows.
Northridge parents often ask about dorm rules and school discipline. Those are separate from the criminal case, and the school will tell you its own steps. We keep our focus on the bond and the court dates.
Court in Van Nuys
Northridge cases are usually heard at Van Nuys Courthouse East, 6230 Sylmar Avenue. Check the papers for the department and the date. Show up early, dress simply, and bring ID. Security can be slow on Monday mornings.
After the bond, keep a record of every date in a phone and on paper. We are glad to answer questions at any time.
We also help families in Reseda and Van Nuys. You can apply at /apply/ in about four minutes, with no Social Security number typed online.
Qualifying pregnant women, eight months or more, with a non-violent charge, bail of $50,000 or less and a working co-signer, may get free bail, premium waived, subject to approval. If you do not qualify, ask anyway. We are often able to help. See the program details.
1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
