Topanga Division in Canoga Park

Woodland Hills is served by the LAPD Topanga Division. The station is at 21501 Schoenborn Street in Canoga Park, in the west end of the Valley. Topanga also covers West Hills and Canoga Park, and it is a large patrol area with busy shopping, office and freeway zones.

Arrests usually go on to the Valley Jail Section in Van Nuys, about twelve miles east, though LAPD can move people. Call to confirm. See the Topanga station page and the Valley Jail page.

Warner Center, Westfield Topanga and Ventura Boulevard

Woodland Hills is a working neighborhood. Warner Center has offices and hotels, Westfield Topanga draws shoppers from all over the west Valley, and Ventura Boulevard has restaurants and bars. Pierce College brings students into the area too. Retail theft, drunk driving after dinner or happy hour, and disputes at large venues are the sorts of calls families make to us from commercial areas.

If the arrest was for shoplifting, bail can be small, set by the county schedule, but a record can follow a job application. A bond lets the person go back to work while the case moves. See how bail works in Los Angeles.

Taking the 101 to Van Nuys

Take the 101 east from Topanga Canyon Boulevard or Canoga Avenue to Van Nuys. In the middle of the night, it is about twenty minutes. At rush hour, the 101 slows to a crawl and can take an hour or more. Surface streets like Ventura Boulevard are slower but steadier.

The jail at 6240 Sylmar Avenue is by the Van Nuys courthouse, so parking is tight on weekdays. If you cannot get there, you can still start everything with us by phone and online at /apply/.

What it costs

The premium is 10% of the bail on our filed rate. With a private attorney, or a veteran defendant or co-signer, it is 8%. Start with 1% down on approved credit and pay the balance monthly.

  • On $9,000 bail, the premium is $900 and 1% down is $90.
  • On $40,000 bail, the premium is $4,000 and 1% down is $400.

Employed co-signers often qualify more easily than others, but approval is never guaranteed. The calculator shows your case. Read is bail money returned to understand what the premium covers.

Visiting at the Valley Jail

Per LAPD, the Valley Jail visiting window is Monday through Friday, 9:30 to noon and 1 to 2:30, and weekends and holidays 8 to noon. One family visit a day. Call 818-374-9645 first. A bail agent or attorney may visit at any time. We handle the paperwork so you do not have to stand at a window.

Our after-an-arrest guide lists what to bring and what not to bring.

Co-signers and work schedules

Many Woodland Hills co-signers work in offices, health care or the entertainment industry, and cannot leave their desks. We can do much of the process by phone and online. A co-signer needs ID and proof of income, like a pay stub. Read co-signer responsibilities so you understand the promise.

If you need a lawyer, we cannot recommend one, but our resources directory lists public defenders and legal aid. Spanish speakers can ask for a Spanish speaking agent.

Court and next dates

Topanga cases are usually heard at Van Nuys Courthouse East, 6230 Sylmar Avenue. Check the release papers for the date and department. Do not miss a date. Read missed court dates to see why.

We also help families in Canoga Park and Tarzana. Qualifying pregnant women, eight months or more, non-violent charge, bail of $50,000 or less, with a working co-signer, may get free bail, premium waived, subject to approval. If you do not qualify, ask anyway. See the program page.

Some people are moved after arraignment to the county jails. Men often go through the Inmate Reception Center and then to Twin Towers or Men's Central. Women go to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. A bond can still be posted, and we help you find where they are. Use the county locator or call 213-473-6100. Moves can happen fast, so always check before driving a long way.

Woodland Hills is far from every jail, so a wasted trip costs real time. Before you leave, write down the full name, the booking number if you have one, and the jail's phone number. Charge your phone. Bring your ID, a bottle of water and a jacket, because waiting rooms run cold. If you are the co-signer, bring your pay stub too, even if we have started the application online. And if you are driving at night, take a breath before you get on the freeway. You will help your person more by arriving safely than by arriving fast.

1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
