In our data, Encino belongs to the LAPD West Valley Division. The station is at 19020 Vanowen St. in Reseda and the phone is 818-374-7611. See our West Valley station page. The division also covers Reseda and Tarzana, so the desk is used to calls from this area.
Valley arrests usually go to Van Nuys
People arrested in the Valley usually go to the Valley Jail Section at 6240 Sylmar Ave. in Van Nuys. LAPD can move people between facilities, so check by calling 818-374-9645 or the county line at 213-473-6100.
This is a big difference from West Side or downtown cases. You do not need to go to Los Angeles Street. Parking at Sylmar Avenue is easier than downtown, but visiting hours are limited. Our jail page lists them, and attorneys or bail agents may visit at other times.
Visiting rules differ from the downtown jail. Our Valley Jail page shows the posted hours, and the rules say one friend or family visit per day, so decide who goes. Attorneys and bail agents can visit at other times.
Driving there from Encino
From Encino, take the 101 east or the 405 north. Van Nuys Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard run north and south and meet the jail area near the Van Nuys civic center. Traffic on the 405 and 101 can be heavy at rush hour, and that matters when you wait for a release.
Give yourself extra time. Ventura Boulevard is the slow way, but it works in an emergency. Have a photo ID and your phone ready. You can start the online application from a car, in a parking lot or from home.
The courthouse next door
Valley arraignments usually happen at the Van Nuys Courthouse East at 6230 Sylmar Ave., right next to the jail. In our data this is the usual court for Encino. Confirm with the paperwork, since some cases are filed elsewhere.
Missing a date can cause a forfeiture, so read the missed court date guide. A careful family puts the date on a calendar and sets two reminders.
Common Encino charges and how bail follows
A late night on Ventura Boulevard can end in a drunk driving arrest. A family dispute can lead to a domestic charge. A shoplifting stop at a shopping center may bring a theft charge. Each type has a different bail range, and the judge can change it.
Bail is not the cost of a bond. A bond premium is 10% of the bail, with an 8% rate for clients who retain a private attorney or who are veterans, or have a veteran co-signer. Through Bail Today, Pay Later, you can start with 1% of the bail down on approved credit. The remaining premium is paid monthly.
Try the calculator and read our guide on how much bail is in California.
Neighbors and where else to read
Encino neighbors include Reseda and Tarzana to the west, Sherman Oaks to the east, and Bel-Air and Brentwood across the hills. If the arrest happened on a different side of Mulholland, the station and the jail may change. Call the desk to be sure.
Free help is on our resources page, which lists public defenders and legal aid. Ask for a Spanish speaking agent when you call if that makes it easier.
What to expect at the Valley Jail
The Valley Jail Section is attached to the Van Nuys station. It handles bookings for much of the Valley, and in recent months some people from other parts of the city have been sent there for medical clearance. That can make waiting longer than usual.
Bring a photo ID, your phone and a charger. Dress comfortably, since you may wait. Do not bring items the building does not allow. Ask the desk what is permitted, and expect a security check.
Property such as phones, wallets and belts is held at booking. It is returned at release, so the person may walk out with nothing in hand but their papers. Bring a jacket, cash for a ride or a charged phone for them, if the rules allow it.
If you are driving from Encino at night, the 101 and 405 move faster after 9 PM. During the morning commute they do not. If the person is released between shifts, you may have to wait in the lobby or the parking lot.
We stay on the phone with you the whole time if you want. Call (213) 725-2815.
1% down is a down payment on approved credit, not the price of the bond. The premium is the rate on file with the California Department of Insurance, 10% of the bail amount, or 8% when a private attorney is retained or you or the defendant is a veteran. The balance goes on a payment plan.
